Gold Coast Offshore Mulloway Tips and Techniques

Gold Coast Offshore Mulloway Tips and Techniques.

HOW TO / THE BASICS.

For this part, I am going to tell you how I fish the Gold Coast artificial blocks (marks at the bottom of the page) for Jewies. I usually start fishing around 4 pm and fish until 8 pm if I have not got a Jewie by that time I am not going to catch one. Always use fresh bait (live or fillets) but I usually use both, next is how to catch Mulloway offshore.

I put a live bait on my Tld 15 with a size 8 sinker and drop it straight to the bottom and then wind up two turns of the handle just to have the live bait just off the bottom and then put the rod in the rod holder and the reel in gear and its all set, Just wait until the rod tip hits the water and you are on! Next rod is my Speedmaster and I put a fresh fillet on that with a size 4 ball sinker, this one I fish a bit different, I hold this one. After the bait hits the bottom I keep hold of this one with the reel out of gear and just keep letting line out as I am drifting, letting line out keeps the bait in contact with the bottom. When a Jewfish grabs this bait I let him run for a couple of seconds then click my reel into gear wait until the line pulls up tight then strike!

The Best Baits.

Fresh is always best but if you have a live bait tank, live is always better! My favorite baits are Pike, Yakkas and legal Tailor. If you have any of these three baits live or dead (fresh) you are off to a good start.

How To Catch Mulloway Of The Gold Coast, The Rigs.

I use the same rig for live and dead bait fishing only the sinker size changes. The rigs are very simple and are just a two hook snelled rig made with 40 to 80 lb leader, 8/0 octopus hooks and a lumo bead.

TIP / I use 40 lb leader with the fillets and 60 to 80 lb with live baits.

The Gear.

In this paragraph, we are going to get back to basics on catching Mulloway offshore on the Gold Coast. First, of, you don't need top end gear for these fish, any spin or overhead reel with a good drag that can handle 10 or 15 kg line will be sufficient. The rod should be 10 to 15 kg glass or graphite.

My favorite reels for this type of fishing is a TLD 15 and my old Shimano Speedmaster both spooled with 10 kg mono.

These reels are very easy to use, cheap to buy and never break down + hold a heap of 10 kg line.

The rods I use are a Silstar 10 kg short stroker glass rods, I find short rods give you more control over large fish and definitely easier on you.

The terminal tackle I use is nothing fancy and all cheap, all you need is good quality hooks, some leader a couple of sinkers and some lumo beads and you are set! This really is easy cheap fishing and the reward with a little Patience is an awesome Mulloway, this is one fish that will make your friends jealous.
